Getting Around Jerusalem
Should You Rent a Car?

If you have your heart set on getting around Jerusalem by car, you can certainly rent a car and do so. If you are going to spend most of your time in Jerusalem itself, however, we don’t recommend it. The city is undergoing extensive construction on its major roads in preparation for a new light-rail system sometime in the future (When in the future? Let’s just say we Jerusalemites aren’t holding our breath!) The result is serious lack of parking, and roads that go one way one day and suddenly change directions the next.

Our advice? Save the rental car for excursions out of town.

You may drive in Israel if you have a valid foreign driver’s license and are at least 18 years old. You may continue to use a foreign driver’s license for up to a year from the day you arrived in the country.
