The City of David Hezekiah Tunnel:
It's one of the most fun of all Jerusalem tours, but bring the right stuff!
Walking through Hezekiah's tunnel at the City of David is a fascinating experience, and lots of fun. In fact, my kids think it's the best of all Jerusalem tours. For a successful experience, though, come prepared. Make sure you bring with you:- A flashlight. A head lamp is best, since it leaves your hands free. It's also less likely to fall in the water. If you forget one, the ticket booth at the entrance sells simple flashlights.
- Water shoes
- A plastic bag for your wet shoes and clothes when you are done
- A change of clothing.
In most cases your shirt will stay dry, but expect your pants or skirt to get wet. The water level varies - it could be ankle deep and then suddenly waist high around the next turn. You exit the tunnel at the pool of Siloam in the Arab village of Silwan. There is no place to change. In the summer, clothes will dry quickly enough, but it can be uncomfortable until they do. We always suggest women travelers bring a pull-on skirt to slip over their wet clothes, making it easier to change. - Lots of drinking water and a sun hat. It's a hike to get back to the entrance once you come out of the tunnel -- and it's all uphill with little or no shade.
- A small backpack for the above items. The tunnel is very narrow in places, so don't bring a big bag.
