Learn Hebrew Free

Yes - you can learn Hebrew free and well!

If your budget is limited - and even if it's not - here is some great news: The program that I used to learn modern conversational Hebrew is now free. It wasn’t free when I used it, (not even close!) so this is an unbelievably great option.

If you are the kind of person who can sit with a book and an audio file for a few weeks, you will speak Hebrew and you will learn lots of cultural content. (You won’t learn to write or read, though.)

The Foreign Service Institute Hebrew language course is designed for the United States Foreign Service. This is the course U.S. diplomats have to take to achieve what the Feds call "minimal professional competency" before being sent overseas to Israel, so you know you're getting one of the best language programs out there.

The modern, updated version costs about $200 dollars. You can buy it at the Foreign Service Institute website. But – if you're willing to settle for an older version that is now in the public domain, you can download the textbook and listen to all the audio files right here for free.

The only drawback to the older course is that the conversations and social situations must have been designed back in the 1960s and I thought they were rather quaintly antiquated when I was learning them back in the 1990s. But so what? It's free and it's a great program.

Give it a few diligent weeks, and you'll be set to converse in Hebrew much better than most.
